As I sat in church this past week, the guest pastor said something that was a revelation in my own heart. He made the statement...
"Nowhere in scripture are we told to trust other people"
WOW! We build relationships on trust, so how can that be? Trust is the one thing that keeps relationships alive. If you don't have trust, conflict arises in your heart, which can hurt/end relationships. I know many relationships in my life that were broken due to my trust in the other person being betrayed.
But in reality, by putting my trust in people I was holding them to a standard that no human can live up to. I was setting them up for failure right from the get go because we are all sinners that make mistakes. Also, by holding them to this unattainable standard I was hurting myself because I was setting myself up to be let down every time.
So, instead of putting our trust in people, let's put our trust in the one who is always good and never fails. Trust the one who is always right, instead of trusting ones who can do wrong. This will eliminate a lot of conflict and hurt because we won't be wasting time and energy trying to figure out who is wrong and who is right. When we do this, we manipulate the situation by building a case against them, which creates that conflicting feeling in our hearts that can slowly begin to create distance in our relationships. When our trust is in God we can rest in the fact that He is always right, which will bring about true peace and joy in our lives and relationships.
Living this out means that we trust in the power of Christ in people and not just in the people themselves. This doesn't mean that people shouldn't be trustworthy though. Scripture tells us to be trustworthy people. The confusion comes from people thinking trust and trustworthiness are the same thing. Trust is complete security and confidence in someone, while trustworthiness is a series of actions made by someone that makes him/her deserving of a little bit of trust. God is both. He is trustworthy, but also the object of trust. We shouldn’t place our trust in people because safety, security, reliability, and confidence are all things we can break but God IS the definition of all of these things! He is a miracle worker, while we are just people that fail everyday. So who do you want to trust today and everyday?!
